Phuket to Bangkok

Phuket to Bangkok, airfare from Bangkok to Phuket, Bangkok to Phuket by air, Bangkok to Phuket by bus, Bangkok to Phuket by road,Bangkok to Phuket distance.

Phuket is a very popular travel and vacation destination in Asia.

Usually people come to Phuket either from abroad by flights or road travels from Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand. Bus travel from Bangkok to Phuket or vice versa is popular and cheap. One way bus ticket from Phuket to Bangkok is about Baht 600,- for the normal bus. Amazingly cheap Bangkok

There are so called VIP buses from Phuket to Bangkok and vice versa, a ticket for the VIP bus is about Baht 800,-. The difference is, the VIP bus has less seats installed, just about half of the normal.

Travel time from Phuket to Bangkok is about 12 hours for both and they leave Phuket or Bangkok bus terminal almost every 2-3 hours. Phuket to Krabi is by ferry via Phi Phi.

Phuket International Airport is the second busiest airport in Thailand. Direct international flights connect Phuket to Malaysia, means Phuket to Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Phuket to Singapore and plenty of other air flights destinations in Asia are available, it varies with the season.

Direct charter flights come in from many other destinations. Air travel to other parts in Thailand always needs a flight from Phuket to Bangkok first and a transfer there. The only exception is Bangkok Air, they offer flights directly from Phuket to Samui and Phuket to U-Tapao near Pattaya south of Bangkok. This could also be a interesting destination to proceed southwards on a trip from Phuket to Cambodia. Bangkok road at Thailand Bangkok.

Airfare from Bangkok to Phuket is relatively low, its around Baht 2000,- for one way, but its fluctuating quite heavily. The best is to go directly to the Bangkok airport and check at the ticket counter of Thai International, they usually have the best prices, but this only available at the counter lounge at the north end of the airport hall. You could also check NOK Air, a subsidiary of Thai International, the countries national Airline. A other company offering flights between Phuket and Bangkok is Air Asia. Check their airfare and be aware to read the small text, there are all kind of taxes, duties and add on for their flights.

This usually doubles or triples, maybe even more the air fare relative to the announced price. This is not only for Bangkok to Phuket flights, its for almost any flight of Air Asia, on top of it they are the "Asia champion" in delays and very reluctant to do anything about, such as refunding ticket or rerouting tickets because of the delay.

A other airline serving the route is Bangkok Air, but they are always the most expensive on any of their routes.

A alternative to travel from Bangkok to Phuket by flights is make the tour

by bus, prices, times and hours are already indicated above. A for sure interesting variant would be to rent a car in Bangkok and travel to Phuket via Hua Hin by road.

Naturally you could do this travel also out of Phuket. If you choose getting from Bangkok to Phuket this way consider to travel both ways with the rented cars.

To start at Phuket or Bangkok and drop the rented car at the other destination becomes difficult and expensive.

A trip from Phuket to Bangkok or vice versa is for sure a great experience and give you a visual to what's going on on the roads. If you have some time on your Thailand vacation do this journey by bus, the bus service is very comfortable. Considering that the bus to Phuket or Bangkok takes about 12 hour driving its necessary to think if you do it in the night if you are not so much interested in the pictures along the road. If you want to do it faster take the flights from Phuket to Bangkok.

Many people ask about a train Phuket to Bangkok, but there is no train. The train to Bangkok runs along the southern Thailand east cost and Phuket is at the west coast. If you are a train aficionado you need to get off the train either at Chumphon or Surat Thani City and take a bus from there. From Surat Thani to Phuket they operate small buses called microbus, they take about 3 hours to reach Phuket and cost about Baht 300,- this also applies for the vice versa trip.

Chumphon is also the drop off point for Kho Tao and Surat Thani is the ferry point to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Both ferries start at Don Sak a pier a little bit south of Surat City. After you end up again at Krung Thep, as Bangkok is know in Thai language take a original Bangkok massage with all blows and whistles your body really will need it.

The is also a good travel service Pattaya Bangkok which even become better after the new airport started since the airport is an the motorway between Bangkok and Pattaya. For a ticket to Bangkok always go to the bus terminal, there are several depending on the travel route you take. If you want to have it more exotic you might even try to travel from Penang to Bangkok and to Kuala Lumpur , for Penang Georgetown its the same routing.

Also the travel to the northern Thailand is very easy and quite cheap. Try Chiang Mai to Bangkok or maybe Sukhothai. Sukhothai is a must see destination in Thailand and from there its easy to reach Mae Sot at the Thailand Myanmar border. After travel down to Umphang a great Thailand outdoor destination with marvelous waterfalls, jungle, river rafting and so on. On the way are also some Karen refugee camps. The road runs just beside the biggest camp on the way to Umphang but its encircled by the Thai military they wont let anyone in our out unless with special permission, be also careful to make pictures or videos they don't like it around the Karen refugee village.

and from there to Phuket via Chumphon.

At Chumphon do a right turn to Ranong and reach the Andaman Sea coast there. Spectacular panoramas are waiting, driving through lush tropical mountain jungle after Chumphon almost all the way to Ranong and Khao Lak..

After about 8 km behind the first intersection to Prachuap Kiri Khan

is a road sign pointing to Myanmar. Have a look, the border is closed to foreigners, but open to locals. The reason is, on the Myanmar side there is no immigration office, only a military outpost.

But there is a huge orchid growers market just in front of the Thai border post. The Myanmar’s come over every day to sell their flowers. There is also a beautiful lake just in front.

The Myanmar’s try to make some money with their exotic orchid plants on this market. But if you are a amateur be very careful since about 80% of the orchid plants have some kind of disease, usually by fungus.

You can easily spot this by checking for yellow leaves or brown spots at the leaves. Don’t touch it since the fungi can easily be transmitted via hand contact. If you touch any, go and have a hand wash with soap afterwards.

At the orchid market on your tour from Bangkok to Phuket they have all kind of exotic orchids, its worth to have a look, on top of it , you wont get as close to rural Myanmar anywhere along the Thailand Myanmar border.

Have a look its a great experience, no problems !

Stop for a night at Ranong its real great. Ranong is the biggest port of Thailand on the west coast. Mainly

After take the excellent coastal road from Ranong via Takua Pa and Khao Lak to Phuket. Near Takua Pa is one of the best Thai National Parks around the huge reservoir.

You follow the Chumphon Ranong road on you Bangkok to Phuket travel you’ve made a good choice. This road has a very diverse landscape ideal for vacation in the lush tropical mountain jungle, great beaches and top notch scuba diving at Similan Islands and Surin Archipelago. Both are easily accessible via Phuket or Khao Lak. This stretch along the

Andaman Sea and the magnificent islands offshore is for sure one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Choose a relaxing southern Thailand beach vacation, or spend your days exploring the lush jungle, incredible limestone formations with great cave labyrinths you can enter by walking or paddle in with canoe or kayak.

It's almost exactly 300 km of beautiful coastline from Ranong to Phuket. Khao Lak vacation would be perfect for a romantic getaway or honeymoon in one of the real great beach hotels like the Meridien Khao Lak.

At Khao Lak
At Khao Lak

Moderately priced restaurants serving delicious Thai and other kind of food are virtually on every second corner. Excellent and quite cheap shopping, as long as you don’t buy imported items. Great beaches, an exciting and amazing cheap nightlife, girls, lady boys, and massage just name it.

Most Thailand vacations are beach vacations, but there is plenty of other vacation destinations to explore. About half way between Phuket and Ranong is Takua Pa and a few kilometer away is one of the most spectacular Thai National Park, the Khao Sok National Park. Enjoy thick jungles, a beautiful lakes started as a reservoir for electricity generation wildlife refuges, hot springs, hiking to waterfalls and beautiful mountain rivers can all be part of your vacation trip between Ranong and Phuket.

The panoramas around the Khao Sok National Park between Surat Thani and Khao Lak are real spectacular, limestone formations popping out from the lake and the jungle like the great panoramas of Guilin in China. Tours around the lake, elephant trekking in the jungle, caving, hiking, canoeing, kayaking just name it, are available.

Now on your travel from Bangkok to Phuket you will reach Khao Lak, another very popular Thai tourist destination, very hard hit by the Tsunami, actually most of the death people were counted in the Khao Lak area.

Khao Lak has kilometers of beautiful beaches, warm emerald shaded tropical waters and a marvelous green hinterland.

Behind Khao Lak its only about 100 km to Phuket. The whole distance driving from Bangkok to Phuket via Ranong is about 900 km.

We will show you further down driving back from Phuket to Bangkok via a different travel tour.

Khao Lak

Now we came to Phuket, pls. check here for more on Phuket and Phuket Beach. Since there are two ways of road travel from Bangkok to Phuket
and vise versa. One is from Bangkok to Phuket via Ranong as just written above. The other way is from Phuket to Bangkok or vice versa via Surat Thani, Ko Samui and Ko Phangan and after back to Bangkok.

-From Phuket to Bangkok via Surat Thani, Koh Samui, Ko Phangan and the Ang Thong Archipelago.

Leaving Phuket on the road over the Sarasin Bridge and doing a right turn after some kilometers in the direction to Phang Nga.

A good 4 lane highway with dangerous curves and bends leads to Phang Nga City. Just before Phang Nga City is a right turn to Phang Nga Bay. This is just behind the Phunga Hotel which is on the right side of the highway. This hotel also could be a good choice if you run into the night. Night travel from Phuket to Bangkok is very dangerous since nobody cares about anything on the road. On top of it many cars or motorbikes drive without lights, others on the wrong side of the road and so on.

The other day I drove from Phuket to Bangkok in the night and counted 9 heavy accidents, with at least 3 dead people, that means every 100 km one

Phang Nga Bay

terrible accident.

At the end of the road Phang Nga Bay opens and you arrive at the jetty.Usually several long tail boats are around. One of the long tail boat guys will approach you and offer you a ride. Its about Baht 800,- to 1300,- for a 3 hour ride to see the area.

James Bond Island
James Bond Island

That is “James Bond Island”, Ko Panyi and some of the abstract limestone formations plus maybe one of the hongs. A hong is a cave where the top eroded and fell down long time ago. Usually you can wade into the hong, swim or paddle into the opening with a

canoe or kayak. This is a real great experience, its like in the movies and is a highlight on your road travel from Phuket to Bangkok. Some small

Kayaking into a hong

beaches are around the limestone islands plus real marvelous panoramas.

After coming back to the Phang Nga Bay jetty do a right turn at the intersection and drive towards Phang Nga City. Just before the city turn right again in Surat Thani direction.

Now the Phuket to Bangkok ride is through a green landscape with palm oil and rubber plantations. From time to time a river is crossed, driving through mangrove forest and the limestone hills pop out from the green carpet.

If you come into the night be aware that most petrol stations in Thailand close between 9 -10 pm, only at the main through roads like Petkassem Road -that's the name of the main north south highway in Thailand.

Mangrove forest and the limestone hills
Mangrove forest and the limestone hills

After this time there are only 2 petrol stations open on the whole distance from Phuket to Surat Thani. This 2 petrol stations are both just behind Phang Nga Bay.

At Surat Thani City the sign posts are up for Don Sak, no need to enter Surat Thani town. Don Sak is the small harbor where the ferries for Koh Samui and Ko Phangan are leaving. Look close to drive into the right lane since this is not marked very clear.

The ferry reach the coast of Koh Samui after 2 – 3 hours. Actually it needs to go to the east coast, that’s where the “music plays”. There is a circular road at Koh Samui around the whole island. Just have a look, you will drive through coconut plantations, see a waterfall and maybe watch the monkeys climbing the palm tree to twist the coconut until it falls down, monkeys are trained for this.

Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan

Koh Samui is a nice place but overcrowded and extremely over commercialist. More on Koh Samui is here, with great pictures and videos.

At Koh Samui maybe stay 2 days and have a look for the islands in the Ang Thong Archipelago.

You can also take a ferry to Koh Phangan, check first if the ferry carries cars. The ferry from Don Sak to Koh Phangan carries cars and trucks.

On the way from Surat Thani to Chumphon

Thailand Road Accident

Behind Chumphon its again the road to Bangkok via Hua Hin. Don’t use the road through Rachaburi to Bangkok since you will end up in a total mess once you arrive in Bangkok. From that direction its very difficult to find the right way. When you arrive at Bangkok form the south or elsewhere you must try to stay

/Bangkok Road Accident

Bangkok Mega Bridge

on the inner circular road as long as possible. Always choose a hotel in Bangkok near a entrance to the circular road otherwise you will end up in the Bangkok traffic mess and that’s no fun. Actually the whole mess is usually created by the people who switch the traffic light since they usually switch red for several minutes for certain direction not considering that the problem is just moved and to bring the jam into motion again its extremely difficult after such a long time.

The cars and motorbikes in this permanent Thailand traffic disaster are so messed up into each other, blocking each other etc. that nothing goes anymore quickly. On top of it many of them switch off the engine because of the long time waiting but about one out in 10 cant get the engine running again, blocking everything and so on. It’s a real disaster area on Bangkok’s road.
